Metabolic AssessmentWhat is metabolism? Metabolism is the biochemical process of combining nutrients with oxygen to release the energy our bodies need to function. Metabolism is typically measured in kilocalories or, more commonly, calories. Total metabolic rate represents the calories needed for maintaining bodily functions, daily activity (occupational and lifestyle), and the energy cost of exercise or planned activity. Why is it necessary to measure metabolism? The Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is the number of calories used to maintain vital functions, and is the amount of energy we use not including daily activity and exercise. This can represent between 50 and 75 % of total energy expenditure (65% is the average). Since RMR accounts for a majority of total calories we need each day, it's a critical piece of information to appropriately establish daily calorie needs, whether we're trying to lose or maintain weight. Is my Metabolic Rate GOOD or BAD? Unlike other health assessments (blood pressure or cholesterol for example), there is no such thing as a good or bad, high or low metabolism. It is, however, unique to you. Two similar individuals can follow the same diet and exercise routine and have dramatically different results. This is why it is important to have your metabolic rate measured. Metabolism accounts for the majority of calories your body burns each day. An accurate measurement gives you the missing link that will put you in control of managing your weight. Call us to arrange an appointment for a metabolic evaluation.
